Pueblo, CO— Public Health officials confirmed Pueblo County’s first pediatric death caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in 2026.
“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the first death related to RSV in Pueblo County this year. We send our most sincere condolences to the impacted family and loved ones,” said Randy Evetts, public health director at the Pueblo Department of Public Health and Environment.
RSV is a common respiratory virus that infects the nose, throat, and lungs, and can spread when an infected person coughs or sneezes or by direct contact with a contaminated surface.
“This tragic loss reminds us that respiratory illnesses can still impact our community even after the normal peak season has passed,” stated Alicia Solis, program manager at PDPHE. Solis added, “It is very important for every individual to take precautions to protect themselves and their loved ones.”
Symptoms of RSV may include cough, runny nose, congestion, a decrease in appetite, sneezing, wheezing, or fever. RSV can also cause more severe illness, such as bronchitis and pneumonia
PDPHE encourages the community, especially older adults and infants younger than six months, to receive an RSV vaccine. The vaccine is currently available at local pharmacies and the health department through the end of April, due to the extended season. Other prevention methods include:
- Stay home and away from others when sick.
- Wash your hands often and thoroughly.
- Wear a mask when around others who are sick.
- Get tested if you have symptoms.
